ABM were employed to design and build a contemporary extension to a home in Dorking, Surrey, consisting of a large kitchen combined with an open plan dining room and snug to the ground floor, in addition to an underground basement consisting of a cinema and games area.
The brief was to ensure that we achieved as much natural light as possible whilst maximising the view and creating a modern open plan kitchen to allow the clients to relax in whilst alone and also entertain their guests.
Large bi-folding doors were incorporated within the design in order to bring the outside in, capitalising on the fantastic landscape. Once opened the kitchen leads on towards a raised timber balcony area. An electric roof light was also centred over the kitchen to allow in as much light as possible.
Access to the basement was achieved by a bespoke spiral staircase, to keep loss of space to a minimum.
Underfloor heating was also installed throughout, to avoid the need for radiators and maximise available wall space.
FDT single roofing membrane was used on the roof area as well as aluminium-clad fascia to enhance the modern concept.
Extensive underpinning also needed to be carried out to the existing house in order to create the underground basement. Every effort was made to make this project as environmentally friendly as possible, which included FDT single ply roofing membrane (less environment impact) and aluminium clad fascia instead of timber. All materials were sourced locally and the timber was from a FSC registered supplier.
